The Memorial - About Linda

That is why the Linda A. Ferguson Memorial scholarship exists- to continue helping others, as Linda always did. The scholarship goes to students studying to be oncology nurses; students who can carry God’s light to a world of hurting cancer patients and can help them in ways we as her family never could imagine.

Linda Ann (Nelson) Ferguson was born in Minnesota on January 18, 1949. She was the youngest of 8 children. As she grew older, she had a desire to be a teacher. She started her schooling at MooreHead St. in MN, but soon felt a call to be in a teaching environment of a godly establishment, so she chose to come to Cedarville University.

At Cedarville University, she met her husband, Roger Ferguson, lifetime resident of Cedarville, OH. Roger was a local farmer, and they met on a blind date at the University.

Linda and Roger were married in August of 1971 and began their lives together in Cedarville. Linda taught for a bit in the city of Springfield, until she became pregnant with her first child. They would go on to have 5 children, with one, David Bruce, passing as an infant.

While Linda became a stay at home mom and tended to her home and children, she was very active in teaching and different ministries within her church, Grace Baptist Church of Cedarville, Oh. Along the course of the years, she taught Sunday School, served as grades 1-3 superintendent of the church’s ministry, kept the library up to date and running within the church, and served faithfully in many areas doing small tasks. She also was quietly involved with March of Dimes, a cause close to her heart. Linda was very selfless and humble, never wanting any credit, only wanting to serve the Lord in all she did.

She was diagnosed in 2006 with Endometrial Cancer. This diagnosis was followed with surgeries and radiation and more surgeries before going into a remission. In the time following the surgeries, the University nursing department would come out to her home to help dress her wounds, take her vitals, care for her needs and tend to the aspects of her body on which cancer was taking its toll. They did these things for free for her, which is in part, why we give the scholarship back to the nursing department at Cedarville University. It was a service greatly appreciated, which holds deep meaning to our family.

Through her cancer battle, Linda never gave up. She was always smiling, always trusting God, always fighting, saying she’d overcome the cancer. She went into remission in 2007, but later the cancer returned in her lung, moving into her lymph nodes. Linda fought hard, with more surgeries and chemo and radiation, always keeping a positive attitude, being the one to encourage her husband and children that she would beat it, that God was in control, that her life was in His hands. She always was a prayer warrior, even through the battle, asking others how she could pray for them, rather than them praying over her. In November 2010, Linda woke up unable to speak or write, and that day it was discovered she had 3 tumors in her brain. More chemo and radiation followed, and even still, while trying to regain her speech efforts, Linda would nod and smile, letting those around her know she was still not giving up; she was trusting God. Eventually the battle took its toll and on March 20, 2011, Linda went home to be with the Lord.

Her family rests in the fact that Linda impacted many along the way- children she watched in her home, the parents of those children, countless kids that passed through her ministry as a teacher at Grace Baptist, many friends with and for whom she prayed diligently for years, and most importantly the legacy of countless lessons she taught to her children and how she loved her husband over the years of following the Lord and serving Him, especially when it was  not easy. Her family knows Linda now resides with her Lord in Heaven, and one day they will again be reunited there.

That is why the Linda A. Ferguson Memorial scholarship exists- to continue helping others, as Linda always did. The scholarship goes to students studying to be oncology nurses; students who can carry God’s light to a world of hurting cancer patients and can help them in ways we as her family never could imagine.
